Illicit Drug Screening, Brief Intervention, and Treatment Placement
Screening Methods:
Informal Discussion

In addition to observation, health professionals sometimes simply verbally inquire as to whether a client is using illicit drugs.  Although some clients will not answer honestly, many will, in part because they are concerned about their health and understand that disclosing such information in a primary care setting does not lead to legal jeopardy.  Health professionals who are skilled in obtaining verbal disclosures from clients may find this approach particularly useful.
