Levels of Illicit Drug Use and Factors Contributing to Use
Factors Underlying Use and Abuse :
Introduction

Research suggests that drug use (including initiation and lower levels of involvement) may be more a result of social, peer, and environmental factors, while drug abuse (including higher levels of drug involvement, drug dependence, and drug use disorders) appears to be more a function of biological, psychological, and psychiatric factors. The risk factors for drug use do not necessarily predict the transition to drug abuse, addiction, or disorder[1]
